General English language courses at International House New York focus on learning through communication and practicing real-life English both in and out of the classroom. We believe in an integrated approach to language learning, incorporating speaking, writing, reading, listening, grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary into every lesson with particular emphasis on practicing language in depth through conversation.

Communication is the key to learning and using English well. Therefore, our classes focus strongly on developing students' communication skills in all areas and learn useful English.

Fun and practical usage are also highly important, which is why our 20-lesson-a-week program includes a weekly elective classes focusing on English in New York, whether this involves learning English through studying current news items, the history of New York or through Broadway theater. Students choose to study with IH New York because they want to learn English and have a great New York experience. And with our New York elective classes we bring this experience alive by bringing New York into the classroom!

For students who want to supplement their English Language Studies with private tuition to accelerate their progress, we also offer Private One-to-One Classes. You can choose to study privately with an experienced and highly qualified teacher for as few or as many hours as you need.

We offer five levels of General English Classes: Beginner, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate and Advanced English.
As a student at IH New York, you can attend classes from 1 week to as many weeks as you would like. The maximum number of students per class is just 14 - all our classes sizes are small - and the minimum age for the courses is 18. English Courses are 20 lessons per week, and you can combine classroom tuition with Private One-to-One Lessons.

Upon arrival, students will find the university setting to be a supportive and friendly environment as they begin first-rate English classes. Our supervised off-site excursions take students all over the city and make the most of the wonders of New York. Also, our on-site activities allow students to meet up with classmates from all over the world.

International House New York provides classes and accommodation at two sites in the city: St. John's University Manhattan (Downtown) and St. John's University in Queens, New York.
We provide two different programs for teenagers:

Summer English Camps
Two-week Summer English Programs for 12-18 year olds. The camps are residential language study programs which include accommodation, all meals, 15 hours of English language study a week, daily excursions around the city and a variety of fun activities.

Special English Programs
These are tailor-made English-Language Programs for groups of students who want to come to New York at any time during the year. Groups can choose to have just English Language Classes provided at the university, or they can choose to have additional services like accommodation or city excursions included. International House has the expertise to put together any type of language study and excursion package at your request.

International House New York has a dedicated teacher training department called Teaching House which runs TESOL Certificate Courses. Teaching House, which teaches TESOL courses in New York, Boston, San Diego and Miami, is the largest University of Cambridge teacher training center in North America. Teaching House prides itself on being at the forefront of course development and cutting-edge teacher training practice.

TKT TESOL:
A qualification for non-native English teachers which incorporates teacher development with language skills improvement. The TKT TESOL is a popular TESOL course for teachers wishing to get a formal qualification from an internationally recognized university. Accredited by the University of Cambridge, UK.

Teacher Training at Teaching House
All Teaching House courses are run by University of Cambridge-approved trainers, who are all highly experienced ESL teachers, having taught for a minimum of five years in a range of different countries. Our trainers have minimum qualifications of a CELTA TESOL and either the DELTA TESOL (Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults) and/or a Master's degree in TESOL. All Cambridge-qualified trainers have undergone a rigorous TESOL training process lasting several months and have been externally assessed by a representative from the University of Cambridge.

Teaching House staff also maintain an industry website called My Teaching House (www.myteachinghouse.com) - a site for bringing teachers together to discuss relevant topics, download lesson materials, locate language schools, find new teaching positions and to access a range of other useful tools. The site has over 11,000 job contacts.
The combination of our high-quality course standards, our affiliation to the International House World Organization and the accreditation provided by the University of Cambridge ensures that our teachers continue to obtain desirable positions whether they choose to teach English in the United States or abroad.
Teaching House runs three different TESOL teacher training courses, all of which are accredited by the University of Cambridge:

CELTA TESOL:
An initial teaching certification for individuals wishing to become teachers or experienced teachers needing a formal qualification and classroom practice development. The CELTA TESOL is the most widely recognized TESOL/TEFL certification of its kind in the world. Accredited by the University of Cambridge, UK.

DELTA TESOL:
An advanced qualification for experienced teachers who have already taken the CELTA TESOL course and have taught a range of different levels of adult learners. The DELTA TESOL is the highest practical qualification of it's kind in the language teaching profession. Accredited by the University of Cambridge, UK.

At International House New York, we offer exam preparation courses for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the Cambridge ESOL First Certificate in English (FCE), and the Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE).
You may need to take an International Exam to apply to an American or foreign university or you may want official recognition of your level of English to improve your job prospects. If this is the case, our Exam Preparation Classes are perfect for you!
The TOEFL Exam is a requirement for non-native English speakers who want to apply to study at the university level in the United States and Canada, primarily. The TOEFL is also accepted by many universities outside of North America. The First Certificate in English (FCE) is a University of Cambridge Exam for students who are able to use everyday written and spoken English at an upper-intermediate level. Students who take the FCE exam often use it to verify their level of English to employers or schools.
